For All Time 2000

CBS Television

Remake! As promised last month, I have reviewed this TV movie re-do of the classic Twilight Zone episode, A Stop at Willoughby 1960. For train exteriors and some interiors, filmmakers traveled to Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Featured trains included the CTrain light rail system (present day) and steam locomotive with short train at Heritage Park (1896). THIS LINK was a tremendous help in identifying the Heritage Park equipment.

How about that gazebo? This above scene is lifted directly out of “Willoughby”. Hey, that’s Mark Harmon! (Playing burned-out advertising exec Charles Lattimer.). Every time I see Mark Harmon, I can’t help but think of his wonderfully-psychotic performance as Ted Bundy in The Deliberate Stranger.

New Train / Old Train – Calgary’s downtown stands in for “Saint Louis” as an inbound CTrain rumbles by in the background; The 1896 train rounds a curve and disappears into the mist at Heritage Park. More about that high cupola Canadian Pacific caboose later.

Ctrain #2065 arrives at the platform. Charles is riding car #2080. Both cars are from Calgary’s original order of 83 Siemens-Duewag U2 electric Light Rail Vehicle’s from 1979-1985.

Charles is doing some preliminary sketches for his upcoming presentation to a client. It does NOT go over well.

Meet Shot! LRV’s glide along on concrete ties. Heading home, old Chuck is doing his best Ted Bundy scowl.

Surprise! Model trains are in this movie, too. Charlie’s nephew has some HO scale in the basement. Oh, and notice the “Somerville Gazette” building prominently displayed in the first panel.

The running steamer is a 4-6-2 with white tires on the drivers and pilot wheels. The cab is painted green and the tender logo is unfamiliar to me. The two passenger cars appear to be in Canadian National’s green/black/gold stripe scheme and the caboose is either CN or CP. Charles is holding what looks like an HO scale blue 4-4-0 steam engine sans tender.

Our “time travel” begins when Chuck finds himself in possession of a magic gold railroad watch – discovered in a mysterious antique store he’s never noticed before…

After another bad day at the office, Charles heads home (nice C-Train platform with rush-hour crowd). Interior of the 2080 car. He checks his pocket watch with the engraving of a 4-4-0 steam locomotive pulling a passenger train. The LRV ducks into a tunnel and….AND…

Suddenly, things have changed quite a bit outside his window. The kindly conductor (played by Bill Cobbs) suggest Chuck get off and take a look around. He refuses at first, but then after 3 such “occurrences” on his commute, he acquiesces.

Wow! What a train! It’s former Canadian Pacific U1b class 0-6-0 #2018 originally built in CP’s Angus Shops (Montreal) in February 1905.

Well, hello there! Say that pose looks familiar… Gadzooks! He’s gone back in time! (It’s March 3, 1896 according to the Somerville (Missouri) Gazette.

BEGIN INTERLUDE

How about that spiffy blue VW Karmann Ghia that Mark Harmon drives to the LRV station? THANKS FOR THE LINK AND CAR ID, BIG BROTHER!! THIS LINK shows that a similar blue Karmann Ghia was used in season 3 & 4 of Get Smart.

Honestly. Who would you rather come home to: #1 This AWFL over-achieving hose-beast, or #2 This wholesome, witty and independent gal?

#1 is Kristen played by Catherine Hicks. Le SCREEECH!!; #2 is Laura Brown played by Mary McDonnell. Rahr-RAHR!

END INTERLUDE

All good things must come to an end. The train back to Saint Louis is waiting at the station as Laura hauls Chuck down to the depot on her buckboard. The two passenger cars (#62 & #63) are labeled for the Morrissey, Fernie & Michel Railway (three towns in the Crowsnest Pass area of British Columbia).

Nice interior view of one of the MF&M coaches; Back to the Future: #2018 and train enters a superimposed (CGI?) tunnel to return to the present day.

So anyway, you get the idea. Back and forth with his fine watch via time tunnels. Rather than spoiling the ending, I’ll just finish my review with a few railroad-related shots:

The caboose on the rear of the train is CP #6209 from the Heritage Park collection. For this movie, it was lettered “Missouri West #27”.

Somerville depot is the former two-story Canadian Pacific station from Shepard, AB at Heritage Park. It’s original location was approximately 10 miles southeast of Calgary.

Present day LRV or 1896 train. Where will Mark Harmon wind up? The answer is just below at the YouTube link. Enjoy!

That is, if it’s still on YouTube…
