MERRY CHRISTMAS 2024!

This is a LONG, but enjoyable review — at least it was for me! ;p

I previously wrote about this ABC Sunday Night Movie ten years ago. My summary of the All-Star Cast, pretty much covers the basics about what happened. Whoever wrote the script for this 97 minute potboiler, obviously had no idea how a railroad operates. The shortcoming of my first review is I only included two pictures!

That just won’t do when you have early-Amtrak equipment on both coasts (ex-Santa Fe Surf Line in California and ex-New Haven Shore Line in Connecticut) with lots of footage inside Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal (LAUPT) as well. Thus, this review will be short on plot and long on pictures.

Oh, did I mention? William Shatner has lots of screen time despite being only 7th in the credits (an unforgiveable oversight) and is the hero of the day — as only Captain Kirk could do it. Engines ahead. Warp factor one.

I’m really torn about the ID of this locomotive in the opening credits. It’s too blurry to get the exact unit number (400 something). At first I thought it was an EMD FL9 locomotive, but AFAIK, those engines didn’t have nose lift rings. So this is probably an EMD E9 diesel selected from a private railroad, pre-Amtrak.

Next Stop, Christmas 2021

Hallmark Channel

Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus… What? Another Hallmark Chick Flick? Well, at least it features a real, live steam locomotive, that I’ve never reviewed before. Connecticut Valley Line Hype!

Kudos to Ben Haas for providing THIS MOST USEFUL LINK describing the origin and travels of this steam engine. In a nutshell, our 2-8-2 locomotive was constructed by Alco in 1920 for the Portland, Astoria & Pacific Railroad (a proposed line that was never built). Valley Railroad #40 spent a good portion of its life on the Aberdeen & Rockfish Railroad in North Carolina before moving to Essex, Connecticut.

Time travel is involved (a la “For All Time 2000”), so set your clocks back, err… forward, be flexible, and enjoy the show. Merry Christmas!

ROWF! Look at those eyes! The two protagonists on our time machine train are (left – Lyndsy Fonseca as Angie Reynolds and right – Christopher Lloyd as the enigmatic Train Conductor).

Switchback 1997

I first heard about this movie from a blog! Many thanks to James Tiroch and his Cinetrains site for providing a wealth of information about the two locomotives used in filming AND their disposition afterwards.

Despite the snazzy “Grande Gold” graphic (see below image) splashed across their flanks, these are NOT Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW) locomotives! At the time of filming, Union Pacific owned D&RGW and would not allow use of their equipment. Movie makers simply leased a couple locomotives and painted them up the way they liked.

And WHAT a couple of engines they are! Two former Southern Pacific EMD-built (1970) SD39’s #5319 & #5325 dressed up in Rio Grande “speed lettering”. Let’s check out this film on the “Main Line Thru The Rockies”.

A pair of Rio Grande diesels is about to enter a tunnel deep in a Colorado canyon. These Espee SD39’s in disguise were frequently renumbered to represent different trains. Notice the cabside number location has been painted out. Here the lead unit is “2010” and the trailing unit is “234”.
